THE STORY OF DORYOKU JUDO ACADEMY
MEET SENSEI DANIE BRUWER
Founder & Head Coach | Doryoku Judo Academy
Hello, I’m Sensei Danie Bruwer - or just Sensei Danie.
It’s an honour to share my journey with you and give you a glimpse into the life experiences, values, and people that have shaped my passion for judo.
Family Life
I’m blessed with a supportive family. My wife, Hanlie, is my greatest cheerleader. I’m the proud father of two wonderful children: Danica, a teacher and crèche owner, and Niel, a full-time judo coach with a Master’s Degree in Nutrition. Both are National Judo Champions, and Danica has earned her National Colours in both Kata and Kumite. Hanlie’s children, Hanru and Yanké, are also pursuing remarkable paths in education and sport.
Judo Journey
My judo journey began in my childhood at Durban Deep Judo Club under the legendary Dr. Sensei Simon Botha. From early club building efforts with my father to competing in the South African Championships from 1972, judo quickly became a defining part of my life. I’ve proudly earned several national titles, including SA Champion titles as both junior and senior, and I’ve represented South Africa internationally, receiving National Colours multiple times.
Education & Varsity
I studied at RAU (now UJ), earning a B.Comm in Accounting and an Honours degree in Business Economics. During these years, I continued competing and winning varsity-level championships while balancing academics and sport.
National Representation & Coaching
After completing military service, I joined the Springbok Judo Team and competed internationally. I’ve coached judo full-time since 1992, producing numerous national champions and coaches. I’ve led clubs across Gauteng, including Kuzushi Judo Kwai and Ippon Judo Academy, and now focus on expanding Doryoku Judo Academy alongside my son Niel.
Doryoku Judo Academy
“Doryoku” means “effort” - a tribute to my parents and the values they instilled in me. Since founding the academy in 2016, I’ve been dedicated to building a judo community grounded in discipline, effort, and personal growth. Today, Doryoku has six dedicated coaches who teach judo in schools across Centurion and beyond.
Coaching Credentials
South African Level 4 Coach
European Union Level 3 Coach
International Judo Federation Level 2 Coach
Studied at the University of Tsukuba in Japan and visited the Kodokan, the birthplace of judo
Other Achievements
From the Comrades Marathon to the Argus Cycle Tour and Midmar Mile, I’ve always believed in pushing my limits. These experiences, alongside judo, have shaped my resilience and love for sport.
Legacy
Many of my former students now run their own successful judo clubs. I’ve coached at provincial and national levels, including managing South Africa’s national teams at international championships. I'm proud to have mentored judoka like Jacques Van Zyl: 3 Times African Champion and Olympian in 2012. By far the most talented and successful Male Judoka South Africa ever produced.
Final Words
Judo is more than a sport - it’s a way of life. Through judo, I strive to make a lasting difference in the lives of every student I meet. Watching young people grow into confident, capable adults has been one of the greatest joys of my life.
